"Lookout" --- Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

It was about 6 months ago that I was looking through my itunes library which I share with my good friend Rudi Goblen (myspace.com/rudigoblen) when I came across Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. At the time when I listened to their music I wouldn't have believed the records I was hearing were released in the 90's. That would explain me getting the same feeling when I heard Amy Winehouse's newest album "Back To Black". I would later learn that the Dap Kings were the backing band to her album and live show (which I caught at coachella 07). Needless to say, i've been jamming out to The Dap Kings with Sharon and Amy. If your into dope funk you must check them out.

You can also take a tour of their Brooklyn studio which is as old school as it gets....

Daptone Studio Tour

Stay tuned for more "Lookout"......and for god sakes go buy a Sharon Jones/Dap Kings record........

From BillBoard.com

"For the first time in his 14-year career, Common tops The Billboard 200 with "Finding Forever." The Geffen set, which features production from Kanye West and a guest appearance by Lily Allen, moved 155,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Common's 2005 effort, "Be," debuted and peaked at No. 2 but had a better sales tally with 185,000."

Well...it's about freakin time....This kind of hip hop artist should have topped the charts years ago. Although "Finding Forever" is not as good as i was hoping on a whole, there are still some great songs to be heard from it. Hear my favorite track from "Finding Forever" below....

"Black Maybe"-- Featuring Bilal

"Lost In Translation"-- China Journal Entry #1

If your wondering....that's me in the vip bathroom at club Bonbon in Shanghai....and oddly enough i was sober. I've been in Shanghai for 3 days now and i feel like an alien on another planet. Besides the music in the clubs and a few other things here and there that are similar to home it's safe to say Kansas doesn't even exist where i'm at. I walked out of the airport into a sea of faces, wandered around for a bit and tried to be as calm as possible while running the scenario of no one picking me up through my head. After about 10-15 minutes looking around in and outside this cat from the club walked up to me and said "Miller?"....I dont think i've ever been so happy to hear my last name. (I've come to later find out that the residents who work at the club never got my name and have been calling me MC Miller ever since..and that's prounounced Mc MEEELAA..LOL..)

We got a dope little apartment off in the cut. 3 bedrooms occupied by myself, Dj Idee, and Dj Infader from Jacksonville. Until the first show we didn't do much except take an introductory walk around the neighborhood and a trip to the nearest little market, mall, and the craziest supermarket i've ever been to in my entire life (more on that spot later). Other than that it's really just been laying around shaking the jet lag...eating idee's grilled cheese sandwiches and watching dvd's (Mostly Simpsons, Old Trinidad fights, and you know I had to watch Grandma's Boy at least once already).

We did our first show last night at club Bonbon. The club is out of hand. People pay a flat rate to get in and then it's open bar all night long. I dont recommend the vodka and orange though. I had like 5 of those last night and i swear to you I didn't even feel a bit buzzed. Maybe that explains the open bar. I'm gonna have to try beer next time. We got on at 1 am and it was thick. The crowd was pretty responsive and it never ceases to amaze me what songs people across the globe do and do not know. Idee played songs that got a lot of response and then there were records I thought would get them hype but they didn't seem to know them. It was weird. We figured that's the jist of the month long residency. By the end of the month we'll have felt them out and figured what works and what doesn't.

Here's a clip from the first couple of minutes of the set at Bonbon.

When i started writing this blog i was sitting in soaking wet shorts from what was supposed to be a small trip to the market which then turned into us getting caught in a freak storm. At least we made a pitstop to hide from the rain in a bootleg dvd spot.

Well...i'm out for now....next up...b-boy battles at a giant water park and Hooters in Shanghai....Here's to being lost....Cheers!
